About Vigilante Films

I’m a fan of vigilante films.  In fact I’m a fan of all sorts of films but I’d like to concentrate on vigilante films for this particular site.

After a rash of this genre of films in the early 1970′s, the Death Wish series being one of the most prominent, the industry settled down to produce a range of movies dating from then until the present day.  There are an incredible number of characters, male and female, who are turned, normally against their will, into a killing machine.

The female characters are particularly interesting because very often the methods used for gaining revenge are non-violent and other, more devious solutions have to be devised. Witness the incredible Pam Greer in “Coffy” and Jennifer Hills in the notorious “I Spit on Your Grave”.

I also include characters who act as a vengeful force, even though that is not what they are doing – Daniel Craig in Casino Royale is a good example.

Lastly let’s not forget the comedy revenge films that manage to combine laughs and a vigilante aspect in one package.  Click the comedy tab at the top for the best of these.

Each week I’m going to look at a particular film or aspect of this genre to build up a varied and informative site about my favourite subject.
